A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
