Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
