A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these medications must be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a intense return of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
