The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will take a quarterly hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will release two seasons every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month pause that started in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the visuals and let the comic to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some alternatively handling more material or more to make up for time.

It's the end of an era for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of creation, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and of course itself have so many side stories, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the following. Today, anime production is structured in cours, with one or two at most releasing each annually, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
