"Any idea when you're chatting with the Haim sisters?" a text reads. "I wanted to ask if I can be their extra sister."

However, there remains one problem: I also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. A host of celebrated admirers have openly petitioned for the position.

One thing is obvious a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy contenders.

Similar to the best bands, they're a close trio. Their videos frequently depict them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'After your show, I got a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate young girls to make music."

"And thus anyone gets an invitation to be the next Haim sister."

Award Nod

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination resonates with the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The album was born from a time of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes follow departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That developed resilience called for a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's honesty shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their dating horror stories.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their place in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an international audience.

However Haim will consistently be their top priority.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "There is no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
